Panthers sign O’Brien

The Florida Panthers, parent club of the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage, have signed defenseman Shane O’Brien to a one-year, two-way contract.

O’Brien has played in 528 career National Hockey League games for Calgary, Colorado, Nashville, Vancouver, Tampa Bay and Anaheim, scoring 13 goals with 78 assists and 911 penalty minutes. He has played in 40 Stanley Cup Playoff games, registering two goals and three assists.

Last season, O’Brien appeared in 31 AHL games with Abbotsford, tallying three goals and five assists for eight points. He added one goal in four postseason games with the Heat, and notched three assists in 45 NHL games with Calgary in 2013-14.

O’Brien has skated in 245 career AHL games with Abbotsford, Portland and Cincinnati, amassing 18 goals and 66 assists for 84 points along with 827 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 44 Calder Cup Playoff games, putting up eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points.
