Penguins drop anchor, take out Admirals

Robert Nilsson’s goal with 2:35 left in regulation sent Wilkes-Barre/Scranton into the second round with a 3-2 victory over Norfolk at the Wachovia Arena on Sunday evening.

Nilsson, who joined the Penguins after being acquired by the Edmonton Oilers in the Ryan Smyth trade with the New York Islanders on Feb. 27, also had an assist in the game and finished the series with nine points (2g, 7a) in the six games.

Micki DuPont and Joe Jensen also scored for Wilkes-Barre, which has reached the division finals for the fourth consecutive season. Nolan Schaefer finished with 25 saves in the victory.

The Admirals’ Pierre Parenteau and Carl Corazzini tied the game with goals 2:16 apart late in the second period. Corey Crawford stopped 26 shots in defeat.

Norfolk, which set franchise records with 50 wins and 108 points in the regular season, fell to 0-6 all-time in best-of-seven Calder Cup Playoff series.

Wilkes-Barre will take on Hershey in the East Division final, beginning Wednesday night at the Giant Center.
