Petersen’s hat trick helps Stars rally for win

Marty Sertich scored the only goal of the shootout to give Iowa a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Peoria at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Tuesday night.

It was the Stars’ second shootout win of the season in as many meetings with the Rivermen, and their third victory this year after they trailed entering the third period.

Toby Petersen accounted for all of Iowa’s offense in regulation with his first career hat trick, moving into a tie for fourth place in the AHL with 16 points on the season. Junior Lessard and Trevor Byrne each registered two assists on the night.

Tobias Stephan made 20 saves in the victory for the Stars and stopped all five Peoria attempts in the shootout, including a save on Erik Johnson, the first overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft who was making his AHL debut for the Rivermen.

Trent Whitfield scored twice for the Rivermen, and Marek Schwarz finished with 27 saves.

The teams meet again Friday night in Peoria.
