Phantoms ink goaltender Irving

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms have signed goaltender Leland Irving to an American Hockey League contract.

A first-round draft choice by Calgary (26th overall) in 2006, Irving spent last season with KooKoo Kouvola in Finland’s Liiga, where he posted a 2.18 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in 35 appearances.

Irving, a 29-year-old native of Swan Hills, Alberta, has a record of 105-101-16 in 235 career AHL appearances with Iowa, Abbotsford and Quad City, with a 2.53 GAA, a .908 save percentage and 15 shutouts. His best AHL season came in 2010-11, when he established career marks in games (61), wins (30), GAA (2.30), save percentage (.913) and shutouts (8).

Irving has also appeared in 13 NHL games with Calgary, going 3-4-4 with a 3.25 GAA and a .902 save percentage.
