Phantoms sign Picard to ATO

The Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday announced the signing of defenseman Alexandre Picard to an amateur tryout contract.

Picard will be available to make his professional debut with the Phantoms in Game 2 of the Calder Cup Finals tonight at Chicago.

A third-round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, the 19-year-old Picard has played the last four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In 2004-05 with the Halifax Mooseheads, the 6-foot-2, 222-pound Picard totaled 38 points (15 goals, 23 assists) in 68 games and led the team to the league finals. He was voted the team’s most valuable player.

The Phantoms and Wolves square off in Game 2 of the 2005 Calder Cup Finals tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. Philadelphia took the early series lead with a 1-0 win in Thursday night’s opener.
