Pirates statement on Jordan Smith

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Portland Pirates have announced today that defenseman Jordan Smith remains at Maine Medical Center after experiencing extreme trauma to his left eye, when a puck deflected into his eye area on Friday night in the Pirates’ game versus the Manchester Monarchs.

Smith received emergency eye surgery performed by Dr. Jeffrey K. Moore, M.D., a retinal specialist, and Dr. Natan D. Kahn, M.D., an orbital specialist, on Friday evening at Maine Eye Center.

Smith remains under the care of Dr. Moore in a critical time of his recovery and is supported by his family at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. He is expected to remain in the hospital through the weekend.

Anaheim’s executive vice president and general manager Brian Burke issued the following statement:

"This is a difficult injury for Jordan, his family and our entire organization. The Mighty Ducks and Portland Pirates will ensure that Jordan continues to receive the best medical care possible."
