Pittsburgh acquires Schaefer, assigns him to WBS

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired goaltender Nolan Schaefer from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a seventh-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Schaefer will be assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Schaefer, 27, is 5-11-3 with a 2.93 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage in 19 AHL appearances with Worcester and Hershey this season. He played in seven NHL games in the 2005-06 season with the Sharks, posting a 5-1-0 record, a 1.88 GAA and a .920 save percentage.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of Yellow Grass, Sask., was originally a fifth-round pick (166th overall) by San Jose in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
