Rampage sign Jared Staal to ATO

San Antonio Rampage general manager Brad Treliving announced today that they have signed right wing Jared Staal to an amateur tryout contract.

Staal, 18, joins the Rampage after completing his third season in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sudbury Wolves. The Wolves’ season ended on Monday after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs to the Belleville Bulls. Staal recorded an assist in three playoff games and posted 52 points (19 goals, 33 assists) in 67 regular season games.

The 6-foot-3, 198-pound Staal tallied 104 points (42 goals, 62 assists) in 190 career games with the Wolves. In his first season with Sudbury (2006-07), Staal recorded one goal in 21 playoff games as the Wolves were defeated in the OHL finals by the Plymouth Whalers.

Staal was Phoenix’s third choice (49th overall) in the second round of the 2008 Entry Draft.

A native of Thunder Bay, Ont., Staal has three brothers — Eric (Carolina Hurricanes), Mark (New York Rangers) and Jordan (Pittsburgh Penguins) — that were all first-round draft picks and currently play in the National Hockey League.
