Red Wings add Brooks

The Detroit Red Wings, NHL affiliate of the Grand Rapids Griffins, on Monday announced the signing of right wing Brendan Brooks to a one-year contract.

Brooks, 27, logged 79 games with the AHL’s Peoria Rivermen last season, contributing 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points. Known as one of the league’s fastest skaters, he is just two years removed from his breakout 2004-05 campaign with Worcester, when he potted 20 goals and finished fourth on the IceCats with 38 points.

In 204 career AHL games with Lowell, Manchester, Worcester and Peoria, Brooks has recorded 40 goals and 40 assists for 80 points. He played for Griffins head coach Greg Ireland in 2000-01 as a member of the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers, leading the club with a career-high 29 goals.
