The Ottawa Senators have extended the contracts of Binghamton Senators head coach Luke Richardson and his staff by an additional year.
Richardson’s contract was originally set to expire at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season and is now up at the end of the 2014-15 season. The extensions also include the contracts of assistant coaches Steve Stirling and Matt Meacham. In addition, Meacham’s role will change from that of video coach to assistant coach.
The 2012-13 season was Richardson’s first at the helm of the B-Sens. He became the seventh coach in Binghamton history upon his replacement of Kurt Kleinendorst at the conclusion of 2011-12. Prior to his appointment in Binghamton, Richardson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators, beginning immediately after his retirement from playing in 2008-09.
Stirling joined the Binghamton Senators’ coaching staff in 2010-11 to help guide the team to a Calder Cup championship. Meacham is entering his sixth season as a full-time member of the staff — all five to this point had been as video coach.
Last season, the B-Sens registered a 44-24-1-7 record under Richardson and his staff, despite plenty of flux throughout the lineup due to injuries at the NHL level in the organization. The team finished as the fourth seed in the AHL’s Eastern Conference before being knocked out of the playoffs by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the first round.
