Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has sent goaltender Martin Gerber to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League on a two-week conditioning assignment.
Gerber, 34, has four wins, nine losses and an overtime loss this season. He has posted a 2.86 goals-against-average and .899 save-percentage in 14 games. Gerber was a healthy scratch in Ottawa’s 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday and yesterday’s 3-2 win over the Thrashers in Atlanta. He last saw action in a 6-4 loss to the Bruins in Boston on Jan. 8.
The six-year NHL veteran joined the Senators as a free agent on July 1, 2006. In 100 games with Ottawa, Gerber has 49 wins, 36 losses and eight overtime/shootout losses, a.907 save-percentage and a 2.76 goals-against average. In 214 career NHL games, he has 104 wins, 73 losses, seven ties, 14 overtime/shootout losses, a .910 save-percentage and 2.61 goals-against average.
Gerber was originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the eighth round, 232nd overall, in the 2001 NHL entry draft. He played two seasons in Anaheim before being traded to Carolina on June 18, 2004, for Tomas Malec and a third-round draft pick in 2004. The Swiss native played the 2005-06 season with the Hurricanes, en route to their Stanley Cup victory in 2006.
