Stars acquire Timonen from Philadelphia

The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Jussi Timonen from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick in 2009.

The Stars have assigned Timonen to the Iowa Stars, Dallas’ primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Timonen, 24, has appeared in 14 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL) this season, registering seven assists with 14 penalty minutes. Among Phantoms team defensemen, he ranked second in assists and points.

Philadelphia’s fifth-round selection in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Timonen appeared in 14 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season, posting four helpers with six penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 193-pound defenseman also notched 17 points (2-15-17) in 46 games with the Phantoms in 2006-07, his first season in North America.

The younger brother of current Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen played parts of four seasons in Finland.
