Stars close out preseason with win

The Iowa Stars closed out the AHL’s 2007 preseason schedule with a 2-0 shutout of the Quad City Flames on Monday night in Urbandale, Iowa.

It was the Stars’ second straight preseason win over the Flames. Iowa opens the regular season on Saturday at San Antonio, while Quad City begins its inaugural AHL campaign hosting Rockford on Saturday.

Mark Fistric and Jeremy Scherlinck scored special-teams goals to account for the Stars’ offense Monday night. Fistric’s goal was a shorthanded rebound shot from the slot 5:39 into the second period. Scherlinck’s goal came with the Stars on the power play later in the second at 14:39. Perttu Lindgren added two assists.

Philippe Sauve played the first and second periods, stopping all 17 shots he faced to get the win. Tobias Stephan took over in the third and turned aside the three shots he saw to combine with Sauve for the shutout.

The Stars outshot the Flames 27-20 and held them to 0-for-8 on the power play.

In roster news from Monday, the Dallas Stars assigned forward Chris Conner to Iowa. Conner led Dallas in scoring during the NHL preseason with three goals and six assists in five games.
