Stars, IceCaps to battle for Calder Cup

The 2014 Calder Cup Finals are set, with the Texas Stars and St. John’s IceCaps ready to do battle for the championship of the American Hockey League.

Both teams advanced to the Finals by winning their respective conference championship series on Tuesday night.

After finishing first overall in the AHL during the regular season, the Stars have won the Western Conference for the second time in their five-year history. Texas reached the Calder Cup Finals in its inaugural season of 2009-10 before falling to the Hershey Bears in six games.

The IceCaps rang up 99 points during the regular season and earned the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, and will play for the Calder Cup in just their third year of existence. It will be the first Finals for an AHL team from St. John’s since the Maple Leafs lost a seven-game title series to the Adirondack Red Wings in 1992.

The 2014 Calder Cup Finals get underway Sunday night in Cedar Park, Texas.
