Thompson scores four in Devils’ win

Paul Thompson scored four goals in his Albany Devils debut, leading his new club to a 5-1 win over the Adirondack Flames at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Saturday night.

Thompson, who joined the Devils in the offseason after splitting last season between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Springfield, opened the scoring 7:21 into the game, and gave Albany a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal 1:11 into the game.

With the Devils holding a one-goal cushion midway through the third period, Thompson completed the hat trick with 9:54 left in regulation, then tied a franchise record with his fourth goal of the night at 13:53.

Joe Whitney recorded three assists and Stefan Matteau added a goal and an assist for Albany in the game. Keith Kinkaid stopped 34 of 35 shots in the victory.

Brett Kulak scored the only goal for the Flames, who made their home debut in front of a standing-room crowd of 5,078 in Glens Falls.

Thompson joined David Clarkson, Matt Halischuk, Tim Sestito, Chad Wiseman and Bobby Butler as Devils skaters with four goals in a single game.
