Van Ryn leaving Tucson to join Blues’ staff

The St. Louis Blues have named Mike Van Ryn an assistant coach on Mike Yeo’s staff for the 2018-19 season.

Van Ryn, 39, completed his first season as a professional head coach in 2017-18, leading the Tucson Roadrunners to a record of 42-20-5-1 and the Pacific Division title. Tucson got past San Jose in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs before falling to the Texas Stars in the division finals. Van Ryn also coached the Pacific Division at the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic in Utica, N.Y.

Van Ryn previously spent two seasons as an assistant with the AHL’s Houston Aeros (2011-13) while Yeo was head coach of their parent club, the Minnesota Wild.

A former defenseman, Van Ryn collected 129 points in 353 NHL games with St. Louis, Florida and Toronto. He also skated in 105 games in the AHL with the Worcester IceCats and San Antonio Rampage.
