Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced Tuesday the appointment of Ron Wilson as assistant coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League.
Wilson will assist Clement Jodoin, who was named the Bulldogs’ head coach on July 22.
In 2010-11, Ron Wilson completed his second season as assistant coach of the Chicago Wolves and his 15th season as an assistant coach in the AHL. After joining the Wolves six games into the 2009-10 season, Wilson helped steer the Wolves to a record of 87-49-6-12 and the West Division in 2009-10.
A native of Toronto, Wilson is in his second stint with the Canadiens organization, having served as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs from 2003-09 and winning a Calder Cup championship in 2007. Wilson also served as Hamilton’s head coach for the final 15 games of the 2008-09 season, posting a 10-3-2-0 record and leading the Bulldogs to a postseason berth.
Before joining the Bulldogs, Wilson was an assistant coach of the Springfield Falcons (1996-2000) and the Saint John Flames (2000-03), helping the Flames to a Calder Cup title in 2001. He also served as head coach in Saint John in 2002-03, maintaining a 22-22-4 record in 48 regular-season games.
In 15 seasons as an assistant coach in the AHL, Wilson has a reputable record of 556-469-106 (1,259 points) in 1,131 regular season contests, winning four division titles and two Calder Cups.
Wilson played a total of 427 career AHL games with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, the Sherbrooke Jets and Canadiens, as well as with the Moncton Hawks, recording 438 points (159 goals, 279 assists). He was a member of two Calder Cup championship teams with Nova Scota (1978, 1979).
Drafted by Montreal in 1976, Wilson also played 832 games over parts of 14 seasons in the NHL with Winnipeg, St. Louis and Montreal.
