Crunch capture series with another OT win over Moose

SYRACUSE 3, MANITOBA 2 (OT)

Trevor Frischmon scored at 8:35 of overtime to give Syracuse a 3-2 victory over Manitoba on Monday at the Onondaga County War Memorial. The Crunch captured the opening-round series against the Moose, 4-2.

Goaltender Karl Goehring made 30 saves, helping the Crunch advance to the second round for the first time since 2002.

The Moose scored the game’s first goal for the fifth time in six games when Brad Moran netted his first of the playoffs at 2:22 of the second period.

Crunch rookie Derick Brassard responded at the 17:12 mark, scoring for a second consecutive game.

The Crunch moved ahead 2-1 on a goal by Alexandre Picard at 6:03 of the third period, but Manitoba’s Jannik Hansen netted the equalizer at 14:35.

Frischmon’s overtime winner was assisted by Derek Dorsett, and allowed Syracuse to become the first team in Calder Cup Playoff history to win four overtime games in a single series.

It marked the Crunch’s first best-of-7 series victory since 1996 and allowed them to avenge a six-game opening-round loss to the Moose two years ago.

Syracuse will take on division-champion Toronto in the North Division finals, beginning on Friday at Ricoh Coliseum.
