Rampage add Smith after Coyotes deal with Bolts

The Phoenix Coyotes have acquired center Wyatt Smith from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for future considerations.

Smith will join the Coyotes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage.

In a related move, the Rampage have dealt forward Grant Potulny to the Norfolk Admirals, Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate.

Smith has recorded three goals, five assists and 12 penalty minutes in 18 games this season for the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. In 2007-08, Smith split the season between the NHL and AHL, collecting three assists in 25 games for the Colorado Avalanche and recording 17 goals and 18 assists in 40 games with the Lake Erie Monsters.

A native of Thief River Falls, Minn., Smith has appeared in 421 career AHL games, recording 131 goals and 169 assists for 300 points with Springfield, Milwaukee, Bridgeport, Houston, Lake Erie and Norfolk. He won a Calder Cup championship with Milwaukee in 2004.

Smith has also recorded 10 goals and 22 assists in 211 NHL games with Phoenix, Nashville, the N.Y. Islanders, Minnesota and Colorado. He was originally drafted by the Coyotes in 1997.

Potulny has recorded one assist in seven games with San Antonio this season. In 260 career AHL contests with San Antonio, Springfield, Hershey and Binghamton, the native of Grand Forks, N.D., has totaled 65 goals and 59 assists for 124 points.
