Biography

Career Notes

Enters his fourth professional season in 2013-14. Gaunce was drafted by Colorado in the second round (50th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He signed an entry level contract with the Avalanche on February 11, 2009 and made his pro and AHL debut with Lake Erie on October 8, 2010 vs. Syracuse. Gaunce tallied an assist for his first pro point with the Monsters on October 9, 2010 at Syracuse and scored his first pro goal with Lake Erie on January 12, 2011 at Hamilton. He made his NHL debut with Colorado on February 12, 2011 at Nashville and then notched his first career NHL point with a goal on Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury on February 16, 2011 at Pittsburgh. On April 2, 2013 Gaunce was traded by the Avalanche to the Dallas Stars in exchange for right win Tomas Vincour. He was immediately assigned to the AHL and made his Texas Stars debut on April 5, 2013 vs. Oklahoma City. Gaunce played in his 200th career AHL game on April 7, 2013 at San Antonio and then scored a goal for his first point with Texas on April 11, 2013 at Charlotte. He tied a Stars’ franchise record for most assists and points in one game with four assists and a +5 rating and was named the game’s first star on April 14, 2013 at San Antonio. Gaunce made his Calder Cup Playoff debut with Texas on April 26, 2013 in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals at Milwaukee. A restricted free agent this summer, he signed a one-year two-way contract with Dallas on June 24, 2013. Gaunce played three seasons of major junior hockey for Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors of the OHL. In 185 career OHL games he recorded 141 points (33 goals, 108 assists) and 321 penalty minutes. Gaunce served as Mississauga’s captain for the 2009-10 season and he helped lead Mississauga to the 2010 OHL Eastern Conference Finals, where they were eliminated by the Barrie Colts in five games. In 31 career OHL playoff games he had 24 points (4 goals, 20 assists) and 60 penalty minutes. Gaunce’s younger brother Brendan was drafted by Vancouver in the first round (26th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and currently plays in the OHL for the Belleville Bulls.
