Sharks sign four to one-year deals

The San Jose Sharks, parent club of the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda, announced on Thursday the signings of defenseman Mark Cundari and forwards John McCarthy, Bryan Lerg and Micheal Haley to one-year contracts.

Cundari, 25, posted 29 points (7 goals, 22 assists) and 64 penalty minutes in 50 games last season with the Adirondack Flames of the American Hockey League. He led all Adirondack defensemen in points, goals and assists (tied) as the team’s alternate captain.

In 281 career AHL games with Adirondack, Chicago, Abbotsford and Peoria, Cundari has tallied 125 points (36 goals, 89 assists) and 398 penalty minutes. He was named to the AHL Western Conference All-Star Team in 2012-13, and has posted one goal and three assists in 12 Calder Cup Playoff games.

Originally signed as a free agent by St. Louis on Sept. 24, 2008, Cundari, a Toronto native, has registered one goal and two assists in eight career NHL games, all with Calgary

McCarthy, 28, appeared in 60 AHL games between Chicago and Worcester last season, totaling 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points. He returns to San Jose, where he has recorded three goals and three assists in 87 career NHL games with the Sharks.

McCarthy has posted 68 goals and 91 assists for 159 points in 302 career AHL games, and was the franchise scoring leader and a former captain for the Worcester Sharks, San Jose’s former AHL affiliate.

The Boston native was originally selected by San Jose in the seventh round of the 2006 NHL Draft (202nd overall).

Haley, 29, collected 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points in 68 AHL games for Worcester last season, serving as an alternate captain for the team. He led the team in both goals and penalty minutes (106).

The forward has recorded 75 goals and 70 assists for 145 points, along with 1,046 penalty minutes, in 437 career AHL games with Worcester, Hartford/Connecticut and Bridgeport. He has added two goals, one assist and 174 PIM in 56 career NHL games with the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and San Jose.

Haley, a native of Guelph, Ont., was originally signed by the Islanders on May 19, 2008.

Lerg, 29, recorded 13 goals and 28 assists for a team-leading 41 points in 68 games with Worcester (AHL) last season. Worcester’s captain also made his NHL debut with San Jose on April 9 at Edmonton, scoring his first career NHL goal and setting a franchise record for most shots (8) in an NHL debut.

In 348 career AHL games with Worcester, Lake Erie, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Springfield, Lerg has amassed 195 points (89 goals, 106 assists). The native of Livonia, Mich., was originally signed as a free agent by Edmonton on April 1, 2008.
