Brad Smyth joined one of the American Hockey League’s most exclusive clubs on Sunday evening when he scored the 300th goal of his AHL career in Manchester’s 3-2 loss to Portland.
Smyth is just the 17th player in the seven-decade history of the AHL to reach that plateau. He hit the milestone with a third-period goal off the Pirates’ Nathan Marsters.
In 553 career AHL games, Smyth has recorded 300 goals and 304 assists for 604 points. He is one of six players ever to lead the AHL in goals twice (68 in 1995-96, 50 in 2000-01), and is one of five to reach the 50-goal mark in two different seasons.
Smyth won the AHL’s scoring title and league MVP honors in 1995-96 with the Carolina Monarchs, falling two goals shy of the league record for goals in one season. He won a Calder Cup championship with the Hartford Wolf Pack in 2000, and played in the AHL All-Star Classic in 2001.
