The Vancouver Canucks, parent club of the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, announced on Saturday that they have recalled goaltender Cory Schneider from Manitoba.
The move comes after Roberto Luongo was injured during the Canucks’ game in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon.
Schnieder, 22, has posted a record of 10-1-0 with one shutout in 11 games played this season with Manitoba. He is tied for the league lead in victories thanks to his current franchise-record 10-game winning streak, and his 1.37 goals-against average is the lowest in the AHL while his .945 save percentage places him second in that category.
Schneider has led the Moose to an AHL-best 28 points with a club record of 14-3-0-0, good for first place in the AHL’s North Division.
Last season, Schneider compiled a record of 20-12-2 with a 2.28 GAA and a .913 save percentage – both of which ranked second among AHL rookie netminders. He was named the Reebok Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for March 2008 and started all six Calder Cup Playoff games for Manitoba, posting a 2-4 record with a 1.92 GAA and a .938 save percentage.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound native of Marblehead, Mass., was drafted by Vancouver in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, 26th overall.
The Canucks also announced they have re-assigned defenseman Nolan Baumgartner to Manitoba.
