Bears’ Green named week’s best

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Hershey Bears defenseman Mike Green has been named the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending April 16, 2006. In two games, Green tallied a goal and five assists for six points to help send the Bears into the Calder Cup Playoffs on a winning streak.

Green assisted on three of Hershey’s goals in a 4-1 win over Philadelphia on Friday night, then scored one goal, assisted on two others, fired a game-high nine shots on goal and posted a plus-2 rating as the Bears beat Binghamton on Saturday, 8-3.

In recognition of his achievement, Green will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Bears home game.

Green, a first-round pick (29th overall) by Washington in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, led all AHL rookie defensemen in scoring with 43 points (nine goals, 34 assists) in 56 games with Hershey in 2005-06. Voted to the AHL All-Rookie Team, Green, a 20-year-old Calgary native, also skated in 22 NHL games with the Capitals this season, tallying one goal and two assists.
