Devils sign defenseman Murphy

The New Jersey Devils, parent club of the AHL’s Lowell Devils, have signed defenseman Cory Murphy to a two-way contract.

Murphy joins the organization after combining for five goals and 11 assists in 32 NHL games with Florida and Tampa Bay in 2008-09. He added two goals and four assists for six points in five AHL games with Rochester.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defenseman was claimed off of re-entry waivers by the Lightning on Jan. 19, 2009, after starting the season with the Panthers.

The native of Kanata, Ont., made his North American professional debut after signing with Florida as a free agent on Mar. 26, 2007. In 79 career NHL games, he has totaled seven goals and 26 assists for 33 points.

Murphy spent six seasons in Europe, including 2001-03 with Blues Espoo (Finland), 2003-05 with Ilves Tampere (Finland), 2005-06 with HC Fribourg-Gotteron (Switzerland), and 2006-07 with HIFK Helsinki (Finland).

He played four seasons (1997-2001) at Colgate University, recording 28 goals and 83 assists for 111 points and 124 penalty minutes in 138 appearances for the Red Raiders.
