Abbotsford and Lake Erie wrap up their season-opening two-game set at Quicken Loans Arena… The Heat took last night’s opener, 2-1, on the strength of power-play goals by Dustin Sylvester and Greg NemiszLeland Irving, who finished second in the AHL with 30 wins last season, made 22 saves in last night’s victory… Greg Mauldin had the only goal for the Monsters… Attendance at the "Q" was 13,021.

Connecticut and Adirondack open their 2011-12 season at the Glens Falls Civic Center… The Phantoms lost 25 of their first 29 games last season, then finished 27-16-2-6 the rest of the way… Adirondack’s Erik Gustafsson, an AHL All-Rookie selection on defense last year, led all first-year players with 44 assists and finished second on the Phantoms with 49 points… Kris Newbury led the Whale in assists (44) and points (61) last season.

Springfield heads to the Times Union Center after seeing its streak of seven consecutive season-opening wins end in a 5-2 loss at Manchester last night… Newcomers Alexandre Giroux and Cody Bass scored for Springfield in the loss… Former Falcon Chad Wiseman had 16-28-44 in 48 games for Albany in 2010-11… Matt Anderson returns to the Devils after leading Albany with 55 points in 76 games last season.

Portland plays its first game as the top affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes tonight, visiting Bridgeport… Portland’s Marc-Antoine Pouliot led Norfolk in scoring with 25-47-72 last year… Other new faces on the Pirates include former AHL All-Stars Mathieu Beaudoin, Tyler Eckford, Nathan Oystrick, Garrett Stafford and Curtis McElhinney… The Sound Tigers were 18-15-4-3 on home ice last season… Kevin Poulin was 10-5-0 (2.19, .932) with two shutouts in 15 appearances for Bridgeport in 2010-11.

Rochester heads to Hamilton to open the 2011-12 season for both clubs… Amerks forward Derek Whitmore recorded 27-20-47 in 80 AHL games for Portland last season… Teammate Drew Schiestel had registered 23 points and a plus-15 rating in 45 games before his season was cut short by injury… The Bulldogs fell one win shy of a trip to the Calder Cup Finals last year, falling to Houston in Game 7 of the conference finals… Aaron Palushaj notched 22-35-57 in 68 regular-season games and added 7-12-19 in 19 postseason outings for Hamilton last year.

St. John’s and Manchester meet tonight at the Verizon Wireless Arena with both teams coming off opening-night victories… The IceCaps got goals from Mark Flood, Paul Postma, Carl Klingberg and Jason Jaffray in a 4-1 victory at Providence last night… Marc-Andre Cliche notched his first professional hat trick and Andrei Loktionov recorded three assists in the Monarchs’ 5-2 win over Springfield.

Toronto begins its campaign in Binghamton tonight against a Senators team that dropped its opener to Hershey last night, 3-2… Patrick Wiercioch and Mark Parrish scored for the Sens in the loss, and Robin Lehner stopped 34 of 37 shots… Binghamton native Jerry D’Amigo had 5-10-15 in 43 games for the Marlies last season… Joe Colborne, a first-round draft pick by Boston in 2008, notched 8-8-16 in 20 games with Toronto last season after being acquired in a trade with the Bruins organization.

Arch-rivals Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton collide for the first of 12 meetings this season and their 125th regular-season meeting all-time… The Penguins won 58 games in the 2010-11 regular season, second all-time only to the 60 games won by the Bears in 2009-10… Both clubs had their playoff hopes dashed by Charlotte last spring, Hershey in round one and Wilkes-Barre in round two… Hershey opened the season with a 3-2 win in Binghamton last night, sparked by shorthanded goals from Christian Hanson and Chris Bourque.

Charlotte and Norfolk wrap up their two-game series at Scope after the Admirals rallied for a 6-5 overtime win last night… Carter Ashton‘s second goal of the night came 1:55 into OT and gave Norfolk the win after the Admirals had trailed by two with less than seven minutes remaining… Jerome Samson and Jon Matsumoto each scored twice for the Checkers… Norfolk scored four special-teams goals, going 3-for-9 on the power play and adding a shorthanded marker.

Milwaukee is coming off a regular-season division title last season, the Admirals’ eighth straight campaign with at least 40 wins and 90 points… Milwaukee finished the 2010-11 season by setting an AHL record, earning a point in 16 consecutive road games (10-0-4-2)… T.J. Hensick (21-48-69) led Peoria in team scoring last season, while Rivermen newcomers Brett Sterling (27-26-53) and Jonathan Cheechoo (18-29-47) did the same with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Worcester, respectively.

A couple of new-look teams begin their 2011-12 season at the AT&T Center, as Chicago (new affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks) visits San Antonio (new affiliate of the Florida Panthers)… The Wolves boast one of the AHL’s best goaltending tandems in 2011 AHL All-Rookie netminder Eddie Lack (28-21-4, 2.26, .926 last year) and former Rampage keeper Matt Climie (26-22-3, 2.64, .913)… San Antonio’s Mike Kostka tied for the AHL lead among defensemen with 16 goals for Rochester last season.

A pair of teams who missed the Calder Cup Playoffs last season look to bounce back in 2011-12, beginning tonight at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford… The IceHogs won 10 of their last 11 games to close out 2010-11, finishing just six points out of a playoff spot… Brian Connelly finished second on the IceHogs and sixth among all AHL defensemen in scoring with 11-41-52 in 80 games last season… Tomas Tatar had 24-33-57 for Grand Rapids last season.
