Alzner, Sloan recalled by Washington

her_200.jpgThe Washington Capitals have recalled defensemen Karl Alzner and Tyler Sloan from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Alzner, 20, played 30 NHL games this season, recording one goal, four assists and two penalty minutes. He recorded his first NHL point Dec. 4 in a 5-2 victory against the New York Islanders and recorded his first NHL goal the next game in a 2-1 victory at Toronto on Dec. 6.

The 6-foot-2, 206-pound Burnaby, B.C., native ranked third among NHL rookies in ice time (19:25 per game).

Alzner, Washington’s first-round draft choice (fifth overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, played in 48 regular-season games with Hershey this season, recording four goals, 16 assists and a +23 rating, which led AHL rookies. He has two assists and a +2 rating in five playoff games with the Bears.

Sloan, 28, made his NHL debut Oct. 21 in his hometown of Calgary and scored his first NHL goal two games later, Oct. 25 at Dallas. He played in 26 NHL games this season, recording one goal, four assists and 14 penalty minutes.

The seventh-year pro stands 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, and is in his third season with Hershey. He has skated in 46 games with the Bears this season and has two goals, 10 assists and a +14 rating. He has two assists and a +5 rating in five playoff games with the Bears.
