Helmer, the Bears’ captain, is in his 15th AHL season and posted 27 points (2-25-27) and a plus-18 rating in 63 regular-season games for Hershey this year.
Helmer, 36, ranks 12th in AHL history with 911 career games played for seven teams, and he served as captain of the Canadian team at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic this past January in Worcester.
A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Helmer also contributed three assists in 12 games with the parent Washington Capitals in 2008-09, and he currently shows one goal through four Calder Cup Playoff games for Hershey this spring. The Bears completed a first-round sweep of Philadelphia and are preparing to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the East Division Finals, beginning on Saturday.
Helmer also ranks among the AHL’s all-time leaders with 99 career playoff games played, and he won a Calder Cup championship with Albany in 1995.
The veteran defenseman has been named both a First Team AHL All-Star (1998) and a Second Team All-Star (2006) during his career.
