Bergeron named MVP of World Juniors

Providence Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron was named the most valuable player of the 2005 World Junior Championships tournament on Tuesday after leading Canada to a 6-1 win over Russia, giving the Canadians their first WJC gold medal since 1997.

Bergeron had a goal and an assist on Tuesday, and finished with five goals and eight assists for a tournament-best 13 points in six games.

Bergeron was also named the tournament’s top forward, while Milwaukee Admirals rookie Ryan Suter, who captained the United Stated to a fourth-place finish, was one of the two defensemen on the tournament all-star team.

Canada finished with a 6-0-0 record, outscoring its opponents by a 41-7 margin.

AHL referee Dave Hansen and AHL linesman Kevin Redding were selected by the IIHF to work the gold-medal match.
