Checkers get Sutter back from Canes

Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned forward Brett Sutter to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Sutter, 24, had played in each of Carolina’s four games after being recalled from Charlotte on Nov. 21, and now has three assists in eight games this season with the Hurricanes.

The Viking, Alta., native was named Charlotte’s captain prior to the season, and has two goals and two assists (4 points) in 14 games this year with the Checkers. He was the Checkers’ leading scorer during last spring’s Calder Cup Playoffs with 14 points (4g, 10a) in 16 games, helping the Checkers reach the conference finals.

Drafted by Calgary in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter has totaled one goal, four assists and 23 penalty minutes in 27 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina.

In 286 career regular-season AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte, he has notched 84 points (34g, 50a) and 276 penalty minutes.
