OKC’s Nelson gets extension from Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers announced today that they have agreed to terms with Oklahoma City Barons head coach Todd Nelson on a three-year contract extension.

Nelson, the only coach in Barons history, has guided the team to the Calder Cup Playoffs in each of his first four seasons, including consecutive trips to the Western Conference Finals in 2012 and 2013 and a division title in 2011-12.

Nelson, 45, has accumulated a record of 161-115-32 (.575) with the Barons.

The Prince Albert, Sask., native broke into the coaching ranks in 2001-02 as a player/assistant with Muskegon in the UHL. He spent the 2002-03 season as an assistant coach with Grand Rapids and later was an assistant with Chicago from 2006-08, helping the Wolves to the 2008 Calder Cup championship. Nelson was an assistant coach with the Atlanta Thrashers from 2008-10 before joining Oklahoma City.

Originally drafted by Pittsburgh in 1989, Nelson played 12 seasons of professional hockey and won a Calder Cup skating with Portland in 1994.
