Game 4

Needing a big turnaround with their season on the line, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins scored three times in the second period and held off the Providence Bruins, 3-1, in Game 4 of the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

The regular-season champion Bruins still have a 3-1 lead in the series, with the Penguins set to host Game 5 on Saturday night.

Jordan Caron forced a turnover at the side of the Wilkes-Barre net and Carter Camper banked a shot in from behind the goal line at 7:37 of the opening period to give Providence an early 1-0 lead. Camper extended his scoring streak to eight games with his eighth goal of the postseason.

Warren Peters tied the game with a snap shot from the right-wing dot at 6:25 of the second, and Riley Holzapfel gave the Penguins their first lead since the early stages of Game 2, burying a rebound into an open cage at 16:10.

Chad Kolarik capped the scoring 1:47 later on a power play, deflecting home Joey Mormina‘s shot from the point to make it 3-1. It was Mormina’s third assist of the night.

Brad Thiessen finished with 31 saves, including 11 in the third period to preserve the win.

Niklas Svedberg stopped 19 shots in the game and saw his (and the Bruins’) six-game winning streak come to an end.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton improved to 18-11 all-time when facing elimination. Providence’s loss was its first since 2000 when the Bruins had a chance to close out a series, ending a string of nine consecutive wins in that situation.
