Pittsburgh re-signs Dumoulin

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman Brian Dumoulin to a two-year contract, it was announced Thursday by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The deal runs through the 2016-17 season and carries an average annual value of $800,000.

Dumoulin, 23, saw action in all five postseason games with Pittsburgh this past spring, when he averaged 14:06 minutes per game and posted a plus-1. He also skated in eight regular-season contests with the Penguins, scoring his first NHL goal Dec. 15 versus Tampa Bay.

The 6-foot-4, 207-pound native of Biddeford, Maine played a majority of the season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he paced all team blueliners in both assists (29) and points (33) in 62 contests. His plus-25 ranked second on the team and seventh in the American Hockey League.

Dumoulin first saw NHL action with Pittsburgh during the 2013-14 campaign, when he played six games, notching his first NHL point with an assist on Dec. 16, 2013 against Toronto.

During Dumoulin’s three seasons with WBS, the team has allowed the fewest goals in the AHL all three years. During that span, Dumoulin has tallied 78 points (15G-63A) in 188 regular-season contests. He’s added 23 points (5G-18A) in 38 playoff games.

Dumoulin played three years at Boston College before turning pro, winning national titles in 2010 and ’12. He was named to the Frozen Four All-Tournament Team both years. Dumoulin was also a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s top player in ’11-12.

The Penguins acquired Dumoulin alongside Brandon Sutter and a 2012 first-round draft pick that became Derrick Pouliot from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Jordan Staal on June 22, 2012. Carolina originally selected Dumoulin in the second round (51stoverall) in 2009.
