Saturday roundup: Monsters sweep Rivermen

LAKE ERIE 4, PEORIA 1
Rookie forward David Marshall scored his first AHL goal of the season and assisted on the game-winner as Lake Erie dropped Peoria by a 4-1 count on Saturday afternoon at Quicken Loans Arena.

The Monsters earned a sweep of their two-game set against the Rivermen and moved to 5-1-0-0 in their last six games overall.

After a scoreless first period, Lake Erie took control with a pair of second-period tallies. Marshall lit the lamp at 7:30 and then picked up the lone assist on a goal by defenseman Brian Fahey at 18:51.

Brock Bradford extended the Monsters’ advantage to 3-0 at 12:51 of the third frame. After Chris Porter put Peoria on the board at 18:28, Matthew Ford sealed the Lake Erie victory with an empty-netter at 19:35.

Ford and Marshall each finished with a goal and a helper on the afternoon, and Monsters goaltender Tyler Weiman (4-3-0) earned the win with 39 saves in net.

LOWELL 3, SPRINGFIELD 2 (OT)
Tim Sestito scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 2:43 of overtime as Lowell took a 3-2 road win over Springfield at the MassMutual Center on Saturday afternoon.

Rookies Matt Taormina and Nick Palmieri also scored for the Devils, and Alexander Vasyunov chipped in a pair of assists in the winning effort.

Lowell goaltender Mike McKenna picked up the victory with 21 saves on 23 shots, helping the Devils snap a three-game winless skid (0-2-1-0).

The Falcons initially took a 1-0 lead when Charles Linglet scored 11:02 into the contest. After Lowell went ahead by a 2-1 count after two periods, Ryan Potulny tied it at 7:07 of the third frame.

Despite the shootout loss, Springfield extended its points streak to five games (2-0-2-1).

HARTFORD 7, PROVIDENCE 0
Amid a barrage of 47 shots on net, Hartford cruised to a 7-0 win over visiting Providence on Saturday at the XL Center.

Defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti (2-2-4) and Corey Locke (1-3-4) each racked up a game-high four points for the Wolf Pack, who scored once in the first period, twice in the second, and four times in the third frame.

Dale Weise posted two goals and an assist in the victory for Hartford, while Jordan Owens and blueliner Ilkka Heikkinen added a goal and a helper apiece.

Wolf Pack rookie Evgeny Grachev posted two assists, and goaltender Chad Johnson pitched the shutout with 17 saves in net.

Hartford’s 7-0 shutout of the Bruins came just one night after the Wolf Pack were handed a 6-0 loss by Hershey. Providence is now winless in four straight contests (0-3-1-0).

HERSHEY 4, ALBANY 1
Hershey tallied from an early 1-0 deficit to capture a 4-1 win over visiting Albany on Saturday at the Giant Center.

Francois Bouchard racked up a goal and two assists for the Bears, giving the second-year pro seven points (2-5-7) in his last two games.

Andrew Gordon posted a goal and an assist for Hershey, while Oskar Osala and Boyd Kane also lit the lamp. Mathieu Perreault chipped in two helpers in the victory.

Bears goaltender Jason Bacashihua earned the win with 23 saves on 24 shots.

River Rats captain Pat Dwyer initially gave his club a 1-0 lead with an unassisted shorthanded tally at 12:25 of the opening period.

MANCHESTER 4, WORCESTER 1
Manchester rolled to its sixth straight win with a 4-1 triumph over visiting Worcester at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday.

Second-year pro Justin Azevedo broke a 1-1 tie for the Monarchs at 15:55 of the second period, and Viacheslav Voynov and Brandon Segal added third-period tallies.

Corey Elkins also scored for Manchester, and goaltender Jeff Zatkoff stopped 44 of 45 shots in the winning effort.

The Monarchs improved to an Atlantic Division-best 9-2-0-0 (18 points).

Dean Strong scored his second goal in as many days for the Sharks.

BRIDGEPORT 3, PORTLAND 2
Bridgeport scored once in each period en route to a 3-2 road win over Portland on Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Trevor Smith, Greg Mauldin, and Michael Haley scored for the Sound Tigers, who improved to 3-1-0-0 in their last four games.

Sound Tigers goaltender Nathan Lawson, an AHL All-Rookie Team member last season, earned the win with 27 saves on 29 shots. Lawson improved to 3-2-0 on the campaign.

Mark McCutcheon netted both goals for the Pirates, and Derek Whitmore picked up two assists.

TEXAS 4, CHICAGO 1
Texas scored three times in the first period and cruised to a 4-1 win over visiting Chicago at the Cedar Park Center.

Stars forward Perttu Lindgren registered a goal and two assists for a game-high three points. Landon Wilson notched a pair of goals, and Francis Wathier rounded out the scoring.

Colton Sceviour picked up a pair of assists, and ex-Wolves goaltender Brent Krahn earned the win with 30 saves in net. Texas extended its points streak to four games (3-0-0-1).

Wolves forward Anthony Stewart snapped Krahn’s shutout bid at 5:58 of the third period.

MILWAUKEE 2, ROCKFORD 1
Cal O’Reilly snapped a 1-1 tie with a power play goal at 5:59 of the third period, and Milwaukee held on for a 2-1 road win over Rockford at the MetroCentre.

After a scoreless first period, the Admirals took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by defenseman Mark Matheson at 1:11 of the second frame.

Matt Keith tied it for the IceHogs at 2:01 of the third period, but O’Reilly netted the game-winner just 3:58 later. O’Reilly’s marker was assisted by Jonathan Blum and Robert Dietrich.

Admirals rookie goaltender Chet Pickard, a first-round draft pick by parent-club Nashville in 2008, earned his first professional win in net with 24 saves on 25 shots.
