The San Jose Sharks, parent club of the AHL’s Worcester Sharks, have acquired defenseman Brett Westgarth from the New York Islanders in exchange for future considerations.
Westgarth, who had signed as a free agent with the Islanders on July 2, 2009, after a year in the San Jose organization, has been assigned to Worcester.
Westgarth had three goals, five assists and 68 penalty minutes in 46 AHL games with Bridgeport this season. The third-year pro from Amherstburg, Ont., spent the 2008-09 season in Worcester, recording nine points (2g, 7a) and 137 PIM.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound blueliner is a Princeton University graduate who skated for the Tigers from 2002-07, compiling four goals and 20 assists for 24 points in 114 collegiate games.
