Riley Holzapfel‘s goal with 1:18 left in regulation snapped a 1-1 tie and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins advanced to the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs with a 3-2 win over the Binghamton Senators on Thursday night.

The Penguins swept the Senators in three straight.

Binghamton clung to a 1-0 lead for most of the game after Matt Puempel scored five minutes into the opening period.

Zach Sill‘s shorthanded goal at 7:32 of the third period finally pulled the Penguins even, and with overtime looming, Holzapfel put the Penguins in front for good at 18:42.

Jayson Megna added an empty-net goal for Wilkes-Barre with 28 seconds remaining, and Mark Borowiecki got the Sens back within one with 1.7 seconds left but the Penguins held on.

After Jeff Zatkoff had gotten the wins in Games 1 and 2, Brad Thiessen drew the start in Game 3 and stopped 19 of 21 shots for the victory. Nathan Lawson stopped 25 of 27 shots in the loss for Binghamton.
