The American Hockey League will go ahead with 28 teams this season after announcing Monday that three have opted out of playing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

American Hockey League President and CEO Scott Howson announced that the 2020-21 season will include 28 teams when it gets underway on February 5.

The American Hockey League Board of Governors has approved the structural framework for an AHL season that will begin on February 5, 2021.

As part of committed efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in hockey, the AHL, ECHL and their member clubs will join the NHL’s Hockey is For Everyone™ initiative to emphasize that the official policy of the sport is one of supporting and prioritizing inclusion on the ice and in locker rooms, boardrooms and stands.
