IceCaps sign Sawada, Arsene

The St. John’s IceCaps have agreed to terms with Raymond Sawada and Dean Arsene on American Hockey League contracts.

Sawada, 27, played in 17 games with the IceCaps last season where he recorded three points (two goals, one assist) and 14 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 15 Calder Cup Playoff games with St. John’s, earning six points (3g, 3a) and 10 penalty minutes.

The Cornell University product began the season with the AHL’s Texas Stars, and totaled seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 43 AHL games between Texas and St. John’s in 2011-12.

Originally drafted by Dallas in the second round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Sawada has played 222 career AHL games with St. John’s, Texas, Manitoba and Iowa, registering 34 goals and 63 assists for 97 poiints. He reached the Calder Cup Finals in 2009 with Manitoba and in 2010 with Texas.

A native of Richmond, B.C., Sawada has appeared in 11 career NHL games, all with Dallas, recording one goal.

Arsene, 32, played in 63 games with the Portland Pirates last season where he accumulated 10 points (2g, 8a) and 110 penalty minutes in his 11th professional campaign.

The left-handed defenseman has played in 513 career AHL games with Hartford, Hershey, Springfield, Peoria and Portland. In that time, the Murrayville, B.C., native has recorded 13 goals and 66 assists for 79 points, along with 1,115 penalty minutes.

Arsene, who was a member of Calder Cup championship teams in Hershey in 2006 and 2009, saw his only NHL action with Edmonton during the 2009-10 season, appearing in 13 games.
