Checkers sign NHL veteran LaRose

The Charlotte Checkers have signed former Carolina Hurricanes right wing Chad LaRose to an American Hockey League deal.

LaRose spent three seasons in the AHL with the Lowell Lock Monsters from before breaking into the NHL. He recorded 41 goals and 42 assists for 83 points in 125 AHL games from 2003-06, and totaled 85 goals and 95 assists for 180 points in 508 regular-season games with the Hurricanes. He was a member of Carolina’s Stanley Cup championship team in 2006.

"For us, he’ll be a top player," Checkers coach Jeff Daniels told CarolinaHurricanes.com. "I think we’re getting a hungry player. We’ve got a guy who’s going to play with a purpose and show not only Carolina, but all of the NHL, that he’s still a young guy and still has a lot of hockey left in him."

A native of Fraser, Mich., LaRose did not play in 2013-14.
