IceHogs shut down Wolves, get back in series

Rockford scored a pair of second-period goals on its way to a 3-1 win over Chicago on Sunday at the MetroCentre in Game 3 of the West Division finals.

The IceHogs picked up a pivotal victory and sliced the Wolves’ series lead to 2-1, with Game 4 set for Wednesday in Rockford.

After a scoreless first period, Kris Versteeg tallied his fourth goal of the playoffs at 8:24 of the middle stanza to put the IceHogs on top for good.

Derek Nesbitt and Petri Kontiola added power play goals for Rockford, with Martin St. Pierre picking up an assist on both. Nesbitt’s goal at 15:47 of the second period turned out to be the game-winner.

The Wolves finally got on the board with 1:16 left in regulation, as rookie Bryan Little scored to break up IceHogs goaltender Corey Crawford’s shutout bid. Crawford finished with 27 saves in the victory.

Rockford secured its fifth win in six tries against the Wolves at the MetroCentre this season.

Chicago goaltender Ondrej Pavelec made 40 saves in the losing effort, as his and the team’s four-game winning streak came to an end.
