The Tucson Roadrunners play the franchise’s first postseason game tonight as they open their Pacific Division semifinal series in San Jose… The 2017-18 Roadrunners saw a 24-point improvement over their inaugural season, winning the division title in head coach Mike Van Ryn’s first year behind the bench… The Barracuda, meanwhile, authored one of the most improbable runs to the playoffs in AHL history… On April 4, San Jose was in eighth place in the Pacific and 10 points behind San Diego with six games remaining; the Barracuda won all six while the Gulls went 1-5-0-0, sending San Jose to the postseason for the third year in a row… Carter Camper (16-45-61), a Calder Cup finalist with Hershey in 2016, recorded 3-16-19 in 15 games after being acquired by Tucson from Cleveland on Feb. 26… AHL All-Rookie forward Dylan Strome tallied 22-31-53 in 50 games with the Roadrunners, to go with the 4-5-9 he posted in 21 NHL outings with Arizona… Strome, Mike Sislo (23-24-47) and Michael Bunting (23-20-43) gave Tucson three 20-goal scorers during the regular season… Tucson had the second-best road record in the AHL this season (24-7-2-1, .750)… San Jose was led in regular-season scoring by rookie forward Rudolfs Balcers (23-25-48)… Emerson Clark notched 9-8-17 in 48 games for the Barracuda, with 2-4-6 coming in eight meetings with Tucson… A 2017 draft pick by the Sharks, 19-year-old winger Ivan Chekhovich racked up 3-6-9 in six games after joining San Jose on Apr. 3… The Barracuda won five of eight meetings with Tucson during the regular season, the only team in the AHL with more wins than losses vs. the Roadrunners in 2017-18… San Jose is opening a playoff series at home for the fifth consecutive time, but is 1-3 in the four previous Game 1’s.

The first puck of the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs drops in Cedar Park when the Texas Stars host the Ontario Reign tonight… The Stars finished their regular-season slate with a 4-0-1-2 mark in their last seven games, overtaking the Reign for second place and home-ice advantage in this series… Veteran forward Travis Morin (10-51-61) led Texas in scoring during the regular season and paced the entire AHL in assists for the second time in his career… Morin, the MVP of the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2014 when Texas won the championship, has 16-33-49 in 65 career AHL postseason games, all with the Stars… Curtis McKenzie (25-23-48) led Texas with 25 goals, including 14 on the power play… Ontario started the 2017-18 season on a six-game losing streak and finished with four straight losses; in between they went 36-15-4-3 (.681)… The Reign were led in scoring during the regular season by Michael Mersch (21-28-49), who has 15-17-32 in 40 career Calder Cup Playoff contests… Matt Moulson registered 18-28-46 in 49 games with Ontario after being assigned on Dec. 5… Mike Amadio, one of four players returning to the Reign after Los Angeles was eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday, recorded 11-24-35 in 32 games with Ontario including a 17-game scoring streak from Dec. 9 to Jan. 15.

In last night’s Stanley Cup Playoff action, Marcus Sorensen, who tallied 18 points in 23 AHL games with the San Jose Barracuda this season, scored his third goal of the series to help the Sharks finish a four-game sweep with a 2-1 win over Anaheim… 2015 AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray made 26 saves for his sixth career postseason shutout and Dominik Simon picked up an assist in his NHL playoff debut as Pittsburgh defeated Philadelphia, 5-0, in Game 4 of their first-round series… 2013 AHL All-Star J.T. Miller notched a goal and two assists as Tampa Bay beat New Jersey, 3-1, in Game 4… Two-time AHL All-Star Pekka Rinne stopped 31 shots as Nashville took a 3-1 series lead with a 3-2 win over Colorado.

April 19, 2007 – Carey Price records a shutout in his professional playoff debut, stopping 34 shots in Hamilton’s 2-0 Game 1 win at Rochester.

April 19, 1996 – Twin brothers Chris Ferraro (4g, 1a) and Peter Ferraro (1g, 5a) combine for 11 points in the Binghamton Rangers’ 8-5 win over Syracuse in Game 1 of their first-round series.

April 19, 1983 – Future AHL Hall of Famer Tim Tookey scores at 27:16 of overtime as the Fredericton Express knock off the Adirondack Red Wings, 6-5, to win their first-round series in six games.

April 19, 1970 – Jim Stanfield’s goal 1:06 into overtime gives the Springfield Kings a Game 7 victory over the Hershey Bears, eliminating the defending Calder Cup champions.
