Rivermen outshine Stars — twice

On a unique night of hockey in Iowa, the Peoria Rivermen earned four big points by wrapping up a 5-3 victory over the host Stars in the completion of a game suspended due to unsafe ice on Nov. 13, then earning a 4-3 shootout victory in the nightcap.

The wins moved Peoria into second place in the West Division with a record of 14-6-0-1. Iowa saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.

Picking up the suspended game at the start of the third period with a 4-3 lead, Peoria held on for victory despite being outshot 10-3 over the final 20 minutes. Jon DiSalvatore, who was playing in a tournament in Germany when the first two periods were played last month, iced the win with an empty-net goal.

In the regularly-scheduled game, the Stars scored three times in the third period, including a shorthanded marker from Mathias Tjarnqvist, to take a 3-2 lead, before Trent Whitfield tied the score with 5:59 left in regulation.

Mike Smith finished with 38 saves for Iowa, which was outshot 42-21 for the game. Reinhard Divis stopped all four Stars attempts in the shootout to nail down the win.
