Vanek lifts Amerks to perfect preseason

Rookie Thomas Vanek capped an impressive preseason with a goal 55 seconds into overtime, giving Rochester a 4-3 win over Cleveland on Sunday.

Vanek, the fifth overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, finished with three goals and two assists in four preseason games.

The Barons (2-0-1-0) couldn’t withstand five late shorthanded situations, as Derek Roy‘s tying goal with 1:17 left in regulation and Vanek’s winner both came on Rochester power plays. The Amerks (5-0-0-0) were 14-for-49 (28.6%) in five preseason contests.

PROVIDENCE 3, SPRINGFIELD 3
Two-time AHL All-Star Andy Hilbert had a goal and two assists as Providence defeated Springfield, 3-2.

Shane Willis led the Falcons (0-3-1-0) with a goal and an assist. Jay Henderson and Matthieu Descoteaux also scored for the Bruins (2-2-0-0).

CHICAGO 3, MILWAUKEE 2 (SO)
Stephen Baby scored in the home half of the sixth shootout round to lift Chicago past Milwaukee, 3-2.

The teams will open the regular season against each other on Friday.

Brandon Segal and Timofei Shishkanov scored in the third period as the Admirals (2-0-0-1) erased a 2-0 deficit. Brian Sipotz and J.P. Vigier scored for the Wolves (2-1-0-0).
