Norfolk gets jump on Senators

A pair of goals by Quintin Laing complemented Michael Leighton’s 31-save effort and boosted Norfolk to a 3-0 win over Binghamton on Wednesday night in the opener of the Calder Cup 2004 Playoffs.

The win gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three East Division qualifying series. The Senators try to avoid elimination in Game 2 on Friday night.

It was the second career postseason shutout for Leighton, who also blanked the Sens five days earlier at the Broome County Arena.

Johnathan Aitken assisted on both of Laing’s goals, and Brandin Cote also scored for Norfolk, which peppered Binghamton’s Ray Emery with 20 shots in the first period and 35 for the game.

Emery finished with 32 saves.
