SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Toronto Marlies right wing Kasperi Kapanen has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 16, 2016.
Kapanen began the 2016-17 season by posting five points in two games and helping the Marlies to a pair of victories.
Kapanen recorded two assists on Saturday afternoon, both on first-period power-play goals, as Toronto defeated Utica, 5-2, in the season opener for both teams. Then on Sunday evening, Kapanen’s second-period goal gave the Marlies the lead for good and he went on to add two more assists in another 5-2 victory over the Comets.
A 20-year-old native of Kuopio, Finland, Kapanen is beginning his second pro season in North America after tallying nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 44 games with the Marlies in 2015-16. He also made his NHL debut last season, appearing in nine games with the Maple Leafs. Kapanen was originally a first-round pick (22nd overall) by Pittsburgh in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
In recognition of his achievement, Kapanen will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Marlies home game.
